Disposition of Remains

The following general information is provided to assist families in their initial decisions. Indicated costs are estimates, based on deaths with no unusual circumstances.

A. Maximum Period Before Interment.

(1) No fixed period if body is embalmed.
(2) Within 24 hours after death, if body is not embalmed.

B. Embalming

Nuevo Laredo has eight funeral homes. All have embalming facilities. Embalming, when required, must be done within 24 hours after death.

C. Cremation

Local laws permit cremation; there are two cremation facilities in Nuevo Laredo. (Capillas Vazquez and Funerales la Paz).

D. Caskets and Containers

Caskets and containers are available locally. To transport remains by casket or container from Nuevo Laredo to Laredo, Texas, an ambulance or hearse is utilized.

E. Exportation of Remains

The local funeral home must obtain the following documents in order to
export a body: One copy each of the death certificate, health permit, embalming permit, and export permit from the State Government.

F. Costs:

All peso costs have been converted from pesos to U.S. dollars (USD) at the rate of approx. $11.5 Mexican pesos to $1.00USD.

(The exchange rate will be the prevailing rate at the time the expense is encurred.)

(1) The lowest cost of burial in Nuevo Laredo is: $1,410.00 USD

(2) The lowest cost of embalming in Nuevo Laredo is: $160.00 USD

(3) Preparation for shipment. To obtain the required documents, the average cost is: $100.00 USD

(4) Shipping costs from Nuevo Laredo to Laredo, Texas including permits: $100.00 USD

(5) Shipping costs from Nuevo Laredo to other cities in the U.S. are as follows:

  • Overland: Laredo to San Antonio, Texas: $250.00 USD
    ($1.60 per mile)


  • Air: there are no major airline services from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico or in Laredo, Texas, capable of shipping remains. Arrangements must be made for shipment of remains via a Laredo funeral home which arranges to transport the remains by ambulance to San Antonio, Texas. Air shipment costs, therefore, would be the cost of the airline shipment plus the overland costs to San Antonio, TX.



  • (6) Cost of caskets available locally:
  • Wood casket (cost range) $100.00 USD to $4,100.00 USD


  • Metal casket (cost range) $555.00 USD to $5,180.00 USD


  • Cost of cremation $525.00 USD


  • Cost of cremation (including Permits, death certificate and plastic urn: $1,115.00 USD.

    (8) Exhumation and shipment:

    (a) Exhumation is permitted 5 years after burial.

    (b) Permit for exhumation (average cost): $80.00 USD

    (c) Urn for remains (average cost):

  • wood: $80.0 USD

  • metal: $150.00 USD


  • (d) Labor costs have no fixed price, since they
    depend upon the amount of work and time
    required for exhumation.
