Requirements to Apply for a U.S. Passport Book or U.S. Passport Card

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 1:30 – 3:00 P.M.

Pick-Up Passports: Friday -- 1:30 - 3:00 P.M.
The Consulate is closed on all
American and Mexican holidays and the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month.

IMPORTANT
• All applicants must be present at the time of interview.

• Documents submitted must be originals or certified copies.
One photocopy is needed of each document you bring. If you do not submit photocopies, a $1.00 USD fee will be charged for each document.

• Please allow approximately TWO to FOUR weeks from the date of adjudication to receive your passport book.  U.S. citizens may begin applying in advance for the new U.S. passport card beginning February 1, 2008, in anticipation of land border travel document requirements.  We expect cards will be available to applicants in spring 2008.

• IMPORTANT NOTE: All visitors to the Consulate are subject to a similar airport-type screening. When planning your visit here, bring only what is needed for your business with us. If you have items with you that cannot be taken into the Consulate
, your entry (and the entry of those in line behind you) will be delayed. Because of security measures, you may have to wait a considerable amount of time outside the Consulate.

1. APPLICATION FORM(S)

Complete the appropriate form at the following link:         

- 1st time Passport application: Form DS-11

- Passport Renewals: Form DS-82

All forms need to be typed or printed in black ink and in English. If a question does not apply to you please write "N/A" for not applicable. If you wish your name to be modified, please present the document that supports such a change.

2. PROOF OF U.S. CITIZENSHIP
- Your most recent U.S. passport
If you have never had a Passport, you must present one of the following:
- Birth certificate (long form; original or certified copy)
- Naturalization or Citizenship Certificate
- Consular Report of Birth Abroad

3. PROOF OF IDENTITY

Official ID with photo attached from Mexico or the United States, such as: driver’s license, state or employment identification cards, previous passport. In case you do not have a valid ID document as listed, you may bring school or university ID if applicable, series of photographs showing the change in applicant’s physical appearance over time, school yearbooks, school grades, etc.

4. MINORS

Minors under 16-years-old must appear in person accompanied by both parents at the time the passport application is submitted. Both parents must present current photo identification.  If one of the parents or legal guardians is not present at the time of the interview, a notarized signed statement in English from the non-appearing parent consenting to the passport issuance to the minor should be submitted, or have a Form DS-3053 filled without signature. The authorized parent will need to present a current photo ID. Please refer to the Law on Passport Applications for Minors.

5. SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER
Although a Social Security number is not required for issuance of a passport, Section 6039E of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 requires that passport applicants provide this information.

6. SECONDARY EVIDENCE

You may be required to submit the following documents as secondary evidence of citizenshipand are encouraged to bring them with you for the interview:
- Hospital birth records
- Proof of birth: Crib ID card, hospital bracelet, doctor’s appointment card, prenatal records for mother
- Baptismal certificate
- School records from Mexico and/or the United States
- Marriage certificate
- Divorce Decree

7. PHOTOGRAPHS 

Please include 4 color photographs. Photographs must be recent (taken within the past six months), identical, 2x2 inches. They must show a front view, full face, on plain light (white or off-white) background. (Vending machine or Polaroid photographs are not acceptable.)

PASSPORT BOOKS

Cost for first time U.S. Passport book applicants
  • $100 USD for adults (age 16 and older)
  • $85 USD for minors (under 16 years old)
 Cost for U.S. Passport book renewals
  • $75 USD for adults (age 16 and older)
  • $60 USD for minors (under 16 years old)
  PASSPORT CARDS Cost for first time U.S. Passport card applicants
  • $45 USD for adults (age 16 and older)
  • $35 USD for minors (under 16 years old)
 Cost for applicants who have a valid U.S. Passport card (renewals)
  • $20 USD for adults (age 16 and older)
  • $10 USD for minors (under 16 years old)
 Passport Book and Passport Card (first time)
  • $120 USD for adults (age 16 and older)
  • $95 USD for minors (under 16 years old)
 $45 for adults and $35 for children.  For adult passport holders, the card will cost $20.    (The cashier only accepts U.S. dollars, Mexican pesos, traveler checks or the following credit cards: American Express, Diner’s Club, Discover, MasterCard and Visa. CHECKS ARE NOT ACCEPTED)
