U.S. Citizen Registration
Registration at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the country you are visiting makes your presence and whereabouts known, in case it is necessary for a consular officer to contact you in an emergency. If you live in or travel frequently to the States of Tamaulipas or Coahuila, Mexico, you should register with the U.S. Consulate in Nuevo Laredo. American consular officers can assist U.S. citizens in many situations, but they cannot do so if they do not know where you are. Your registration may also facilitate the provision of routine consular services (e.g., passport issuance) and emergency services (e.g., injuries or accidents).
In accordance with the Privacy Act, all information you provide and information on your welfare or whereabouts may not be released to inquirers without your expressed written authorization. If you are traveling, remember to leave a detailed itinerary and the numbers of copies of your passport or other citizenship documents with a friend or relative in the United States.

You may also register in person at the Consulate. Registration at the Consulate, where your documents proving citizenship and identity can be reviewed by a consular officer, can serve as proof of citizenship for future services you may need.
