Messages for U.S. Citizens
Security Message (September 26, 2012)
Increased Violence in Piedras Negras
The U.S. Consulate in Nuevo Laredo alerts U.S. citizens traveling and residing in the Piedras Negras area to an increase in violence related to Transnational Criminal Organizations (TCO). Since September 17, 2012, when 131 prisoners escaped from the CERESO in Piedras Negras, there have been numerous violent incidents in and around the Piedras Negras area. On September 20, a gunfight was reported between TCO and Mexican authorities in the Villa Hermosa sector of the city. On September 24, a gunfight was reported between members of a TCO and the Mexican authorities in the Cumbres sector. In addition, seven people were killed and 24 were wounded during a funeral in Torreon, Coahuila. On September 25, two separate gunfights were confirmed by Coahuila state authorities in the city. Also on September 25th, the Bishop of the Piedras Negras Catholic Diocese was a victim of a carjacking at gunpoint. On September 26, 2012, the International Bridge II in Piedras Negras was closed for most of the day due to a discovered grenade. Some of those involved with these violent attacks and gunfights have been confirmed as escaped prisoners. Because of this recent escalation in criminal activity, the U.S. Consulate urges all U.S. citizens to maintain a low profile and a heightened sense of awareness.
